Apatite is a general term for any one of a series of phosphate minerals. All of the apatites are structurally identical calcium phosphates. They differ in their composition: fluoropatite containsfluorine; hydroxylapatite contains hydroxyl (OH); and chlorapatite contains chlorine. Fluorapatite is the most important mineral commercially, being the world’s major source of phosphorus; chlorapatite is relatively rare. Carbonate fluorapatite occurs in fossil bones and teeth and associated sediments. Corbonate hydroxylapatite is the principal component of contemporary human bones and teeth. Apatite is commonly found as wellformed and transparent, coloured, glassy crystals, and in masses, or nodules. The name is derived the Greek apatie, meaning ‘deceit’, and referring to its similarity to crystals of other minerals such as aquamarine, amethyst, and olivine.
Apatite is an accessory mineral in a wide range of igneous rocks,  including pegmatites and high-temperature hydrothermal veins. Most gem-qualiy material is associated with pegmaties. It is also found in bedded marine deposits, which are frequently mined as a source of phosphorus. Fine apatite crystals occur in many localities.
